Manuel González Pató Biography

Manuel González Pató was born on March 3, 1913 in Ponce. He began his academic life in the local area of Maragüez, and when he finished his first grade, his parents moved to downtown Ponce where he finished his elementary, intermediate and superior studies. Later on, he became a student of Agronomy in Louisiana's University in the United State and, thanks to a scholarship, he finished his Agronomy studies. He was a member of the Student's Council in the aforementioned university. Because he was a big fan of sports, we can state that he lived for them. He practiced boxing in Louisiana's University and he had the chance of being part of the Varsity team in the Welter (148 pounds) weight category. He participated in the national eliminatory of the Olympic Games celebrated in Los Angeles, as an alternate, but couldn't participate in his category because Eddie Flyn, main player, had won the championship.

In 1937 he returned to Puerto Rico and started working as an Agronomy teacher and, later on, as an Agent of the Agricultural Extension, until he was called to serve the United State Army in 1938. As a member of this honorific corps, he received the Second Tenement commission. In his return to Puerto Rico, he started to work as a Physical Education teacher in Ponce High School. He was then ascended
as general supervisor and, in 1959, the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico made him part of their staff. He worked there until the day of his death in 1973. In his honor, the student's center at that University carries his name. As a sportsman, he went to the Worldwide Olimpic Games in 1932; Central American Games in Mexico in 1953; the Pan-American Games which were celebrated in said country in 1954; to the Central American Games in Caracas, 1958, and the Pan-American in Chicago in 1959. He was a coach for the Central American Games celebrated in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1966 and, in the same year, he traveled to Jamaica as a delegate of the British community. He as also a writer and his book, "Tratado de Educación Física", is used by the United States Organization. He was married to Fellita Argüelles and they had two children. Father, Writer, Educator, Sportsman and, most of all, a great human being he is remembered by this students with love respect, and admiration. His name will be remembered amongst the immortals of our "Cuidad Señorial".
